NFL Admits Jeff Triplette Made Incorrect Call in Cincinnati Bengals-Indianapolis Colts Game

NFL official, Jeff Triplette, has been the center of attention in recent weeks, and it's certainly not for anything good. And on Tuesday, the NFL's head of officiating, Dean Blandino, publicly admitted that Triplette made the wrong call when he reversed a play on the field during Sunday's game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts.

On a 4th-and-Goal play from the Colts' one-yard line, Indianapolis defensive tackle Josh Chapman appeared to trip Cincinnati running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who fell short of the goal line. Initially ruled down, it would have turned the ball over to the Colts. However, the play was reviewed by Triplette and subsequently overturned, giving the Bengals a then 14-0 lead.

"It wasn't a correct call," Blandino, the league's head of officiating, said on "Total Access" on the NFL Network. "We made a mistake here."

Despite inconclusive video evidence, the call should not have been overturned because Green-Ellis was ruled down on the field.

"The call on the field was that he was touched and he was down by contact with the ball short of the goal line," Blandino said on NFL Network. "In order to overturn that there has to be indisputable visual evidence that the call on the field was incorrect. That's the standard."

Following the game, Triplette foolishly admitted that upon review, he didn't even check to see if Chapman had touched Green-Ellis; only whether or not Green-Ellis bounced into the endzone.

"When we reviewed the video at the goal line, there was nobody touching him there, and then he bounced into the end zone," Triplette said."We looked at the goal line. (Those) were the shots that we looked at."

As poor as the call/review was, the Colts trailed by as much as 21 in the fourth quarter, so it didn't really dramatically impact the result of the game. However, that's not to say continued bad calls won't, as we've already seen that a number of times around the league this season.
