The Cincinnati Bengals placed linebacker Keith Rivers on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list effectively ending his season for 2011. Rivers had been on the PUP list because of wrist surgery he underwent in July. The Bengals had a three week window in which to decide what to do with Rivers and decided Tuesday to shut him down.
Rivers was the team's first round draft choice in 2008 out of USC. He finished his rookie season on the IR after being blindsided by a Hines Ward block, suffering a broken jaw. He rebounded for nice seasons in 2009 and 2010 when he was second on the team in tackles, but has not yet materialized into the dominating outside linebacker he was projected to be coming out of college.
The Bengals went out this off season and signed both Thomas Howard and Manny Lawson, both outside linebackers like Rivers. In addition, they spent a draft pick on Dontay Moch in this past draft. Rivers has two years remaining on his contract. It is not clear at this time what his future plans are with the team.Tags: Cincinnati, Cincinnati Bengals, Football, Keith Rivers, NFL
