We must be getting closer to real football because the Bengals are once again heading up the police blotter. In separate incidents this weekend, S Marvin White and free agent RB Cedric Benson were both arrested, running the Bengals total to three in the last week.
Adding to PacMan Jones' resisting arrest charge last week, White was arrested in Louisiana for verbally abusing a child care worker and Benson was charged with assaulting a relative in Texas. No more details have been released with regard to the Benson case, but the timing of the incident couldn't have been worse for the free agent running back.
With the lockout slated to end on Thursday and a hurried negotiating period for free agents to follow, Benson likely destroyed any leverage he might have had in negotiating with other teams. Given his checkered past, this latest incident will likely cool any interest other teams may have had in the running back coming off consecutive 1000 yard seasons.
For White, the likelihood of him staying a Bengal may be in jeopardy given the addition of Robert Sands to the competition at the safety spot. Both White's and Jones' futures, however, may be tied to the Bengals willingness and ability to ink free agents Chinedum Ndukwe and Johnathan Joseph in the 72 hour negotiating window each team will have to re-sign their own free agent players.
